VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State baseball team posted a no-hitter in the nightcap and a season-high 13 runs in the opener of a doubleheader sweep of visiting Kentucky Wesleyan Sunday. VSU improved to 10-4 on the year, while KWC fell to 2-8.
VSU junior hurler
Cooper Cain tossed a no-hitter in the nightcap in an 8-1 run as he allowed one unearned run, walked three and fanned 14. The Blazers dominated the opener with six runs in the third inning en route to a 13-3 victory.
VSU seniors
DJ King and
Josh Broughton each posted four hits for the twin bill as King was 4 of 6 with three RBI and three runs scored, while Broughton was 4 of 7 with five runs scored a triple and a RBI. The VSU staff allowed just seven hits, four runs – two earned, walked eight and fanned 26 as KWC hit .121 and the Blazers hit .417 for the doubleheader.
Valdosta State 13, Kentucky Wesleyan 3 (Game #1)
In the opener, senior
Jonathan Gettys got two outs, but a walk, error, walk loaded the bases for the Panthers in the top of the first. Following a mound visit, on a 3-2 count, Gettys fanned Bradlee Fuhrhop to end the threat as the Panthers left the bags full.
Two walks began the bottom of the second for the Blazers and a hit batsmen loaded the bases with one out. KWC pitcher Ryan Hundley got a strikeout looking for the second out as the Blazer roster turned over. On a 3-2 count, Hundley got a fly out to right to end the inning as the Blazers left the bags full.
Two singles and a hit batsmen loaded the bases for the Panthers in the top of the third with nobody out. On a 1-2 count with one out, Cam Curry singled to center, plating two runs chasing Gettys from the game in favor of junior
Bryce Van Horn. On the 12
th pitch of the at bat, Fuhrhop drew a walk to load the bases once again. On a full out, Van Horn fanned Ben Wilcoxson to get out of the jam as KWC left the bags full once again, but was able to scratch across two runs.
With one out in the bottom of the third, senior
Josh Broughton tripled to right center for the first hit of the game for the Blazers. It was the first triple of the season for VSU. Senior
DJ King singled to right for a RBI and a 2-1 score. Junior
Mike Christopoulos singled to right plating King for a 2-2 score. Junior
Jowenrick Daantji singled to right plating two runs for a 4-2 score. KWC made a move to the bullpen in favor of Joey Lara, replacing Hundley. Back-to-back passed balls plated the fifth run of the frame and the third passed ball of the inning scored the sixth run for a 6-2 lead through three innings.
In the bottom of the sixth, senior
Mack Hathcock singled and a walk followed. Broughton hit a fly ball to left which was dropped by the left fielder loading the bases. King singled home a run and senior
Aaron Haughton singled home two more for a 9-2 lead.
On a collision in shallow center field, KWC plated a run with two out in the top of the seventh for a 9-3 score. Dahl got out of the inning with a fly out to right as KWC left its 11
th player stranded for the game with runners at second and third.
VSU added four runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 13-3 and went on for the win.
VSU tallied a season-high 13 runs on 14 hits with two errors, while KWC had three runs on seven hits and one error. King went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBI, while senior
Aaron Haughton was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and three RBI and Christopoulos was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBI.
Dahl (2-1) took the win in relief, going four innings, allowing three hits, one unearned run, walked one and fanned two. Hundley (0-3) took the loss for the Panthers, going 2.2 innings, allowing four hits, five runs – four earned, walked three and fanned one. Curry went 2 for 3 with two RBI for KWC.
Valdosta State 8, Kentucky Wesleyan 1 (Game 2)
Junior VSU hurler
Cooper Cain struck out the side in the top of the first. Two singles and a great bunt up the third base line loaded the bases for the Blazers in the bottom of the first with nobody out. King drew a 3-2 walk for a RBI and a 1-0 lead. Christopoulos hit a sacrifice fly to right for a 2-0 lead. VSU got in a run down for the third run and a 3-0 lead through one inning.
An error, walk and a great sacrifice bunt put two Panthers in scoring position with one out in the top of the second. The second error of the frame led to a run for the Panthers. Cain came back with two big strikeouts to get out of the inning.
VSU added a run in the second after loading the bases on a RBI ground out from junior
Logan Stephens for a 4-1 lead. Cain struck out the side for the third time in the top of the fifth for his 12
th strikeout of the game.
A RBI double from Broughton plated a run in the bottom of the fifth for the Blazers and a 5-1 score. Christopoulos doubled to right on a hit and run plating two runs for a 7-1 lead. VSU stretched the lead to 8-1 on a RBI single to left from junior
Jordan Holt.
Cain retired the Panthers in order in the top of the seventh for the complete game as he fanned 14 and didn't allow a hit with three walks and one unearned run, improving to 2-1 on the year.
VSU had 11 hits with eight runs and two errors as four different Blazers had two hits each in the night cap. Christopoulos was 1 for 3 with three RBI and one run scored. Mitchell Jones (0-1) took the loss for the Panthers in 3.1 innings, allowing six hits, four earned runs, walked three and fanned four.
