Lady Blazers Fall to West Alabama, 67-54

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's basketball team was unable to overcome cold shooting in the final period in a 67-54 loss to West Alabama Saturday Afternoon.  
 
With the loss, VSU fell to 9-5 overall and 3-3 in Gulf South Conference play, while West Alabama improved to 6-6 and 3-2 in league play.  Three Lady Blazers were in double figures led by 14 points from senior Maddy Corazza on 5 of 11 from the field and 4 of 4 from the line, while sophomore Kayla Bonilla added 11 points as did junior Nari Garner.
 
UWA's McKenzie Parker had a game-high 20 points leading two Tigers in double figures.  She went 7 of 10 from the field and 6 of 9 from beyond the arc as she buried a triple from the scorer's table at the buzzer before halftime.  Kierra Groce added 18 points off the bench for the Tigers.
 
VSU shot 19 of 61 from the field for 31.1 percent, while going 6 of 25 from beyond the arc and 10 of 12 from the line.  UWA shot 38.1 percent on 24 of 63 from the field, 8 of 21 from beyond the arc and 11 of 15 from the line.  The Tigers dominated the glass to the tune of 51-34, but VSU capitalized on UWA miscues for a 23-6 lead in points off turnovers as the Lady Blazers forced 18 miscues by the Tigers.  
 
West Alabama led 39-32 at halftime as VSU battled back from an 11-point deficit in the third quarter to end the frame on a 9-4 run for a 53-47 deficit. 
 
 In the fourth, however, both teams combined for just five five goals as VSU was 2 of 13 from the field in the frame, while UWA was 3 of 16 and both teams were a combined 1 of 11 from beyond the arc.  UWA went 7 of 8 from the line, while VSU was 3 of 4. UWA came up with 17 rebounds in the final period and eight on the offensive end to help pull away for the 67-54 lead, outscoring VSU 14-7 in the frame.
