Five Blazers in Double Figures Lead VSU to 113-91 Victory at Auburn Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Valdosta State men's basketball team responded nicely after the setback Thursday at Montevallo, with a 113-91 win at Auburn Montgomery Saturday afternoon.  Five Blazers scored in double figures as senior Beau Justice dropped a game-high 31 points and led the team with nine rebounds.

VSU outscored AUM 63-39 in the first half and posted 50 points in the second half to run away with the win as the team improved to 15-5 overall and 8-4 in Gulf South Conference play.  The Blazers spoiled AUM's Homecoming festivities as the Warhawks fell to 6-12 overall and 2-8 in conference play.

Justice went 9 of 16 from the field, while draining three triples and went a perfect 10 of 10 from the line, while dishing out five assists.  Junior Bryce Smith added 16 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while juniors Clay Guillozet and Goree Venable each had 14 points and senior Winston Morgan added 12 on four triples.

As a team, VSU shot an even 50 percent on 43 of 86, while going 11 of 31 from beyond the arc and 16 of 21 from the line.  The Blazers dominated the glass, 52-37 and forced 14 miscues by AUM leading to a 21-13 lead in points off turnovers.  VSU scored 52 points in the paint in the game and held a 21-12 lead in offensive rebounds.

The Warhawks went 31 of 69 from the field for 44.9 percent, while going 11 of 28 from range and 18 of 25 from the line.  Carlos Bell had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.  Kenneth Keith had a team-high 18 points leading five players and four starters in double figures.  Darrion Taylor dropped 17 points and had five triples.

AUM jumped out to an early 4-2 lead, but that would be it as VSU then used a 19-6 run for a 21-10 lead with 11:54 left in the first half on a layup from senior Desmond DeRamus, who made his return to AUM where he played basketball for the Warhawks last season.  DeRamus finished with six points in the game, while recording a team-high assists and five steals.

The Warhawks cut the deficit to seven on a number of occasions, with the last being at 35-28 with 6:53 left in the first half.  From there, VSU blew the game wide open as it ended the half on a 28-11 run for a 63-39 lead at halftime.  During the run, Justice hit four of his free throws on a technical foul.

VSU senior Greg Zuppas hit a triple for a 68-41 lead early in the second half and the largest lead of the game, but the Warhawks wouldn't go quietly as they quickly cut the deficit to 18 capped on a triple from Taylor, but VSU would answer pushing the lead back over 20 two more times.

AUM got as close twice with the last being at 93-78 on a triple from Keith with 9:05 left, but VSU extended the lead once again back to over 20 points and settled for the 113-91 win, marking the fourth time VSU has scored 110 or more points this season and the first in league play.

VSU returns home to host Montevallo Thursday at 8 p.m. in The Complex.  Links to live stats, audio/video streaming, ticket information and more can be found at vstateblazers.com on the men's basketball schedule page.  Thursday's game also will be broadcast on 92.1 WDDQ with Mike Chason having the call.
