THE LEAD: The Valdosta State volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to force a decisive set, but was unable to hang on, falling 3-2 (25-17, 25-27, 19-25, 25-17, 13-15) to Limestone in the second game of the Converse Tournament Friday afternoon. The Blazers have a quick turnaround as they face North Greenville at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Blazers broke open a tie score in the first set with a kill from junior Dariah Powell for a 13-12 score.
- VSU used an 8-4 run for a 20-16 lead on an attack error by the Saints and won the final four points for a 25-17 victory.
- The Blazers led for a majority of the second set, but tied the set at 17 on a kill by freshman Jessie Mooney.
- Limestone rattled off the next five points for a 22-17 lead, but out of the timeout the Blazers roared back to take a 25-24 lead on an attack error by the Saints.
- The Saints fought off set point with a kill from Madysen Williams and a pair of miscues by the Blazers gave Limestone the 27-25 victory.
- The third set was tied at 18, but Limestone went on a 7-1 run for a 25-19 win and a 2-1 set lead.
- VSU rallied in the fourth set as the Blazers used a 6-0run for a 12-6 lead on five-straight serves by junior Kayla Widera. Later, VSU swelled the lead to 20-13 on an ace by senior Chelsea Chavers as the Blazers went on for a 25-17 win to force the pivotal set.
- In the fifth set, the Blazers battled back from an early deficit for a 10-9 lead on a trio of serves by sophomore Tammy Reyes-Perez.
- With the set tied at 12, a block error on the Blazers gave the Saints the lead, but a service error by Limestone tied the set. Williams earned back-to-back kills for the Saints for the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The match saw 32 ties and 15 lead changes throughout, including seven ties and four lead changes in the fifth set.
- VSU hit .164 with 53 kills in 165 swings, while committing 26 errors. Limestone hit .145 with 48 kills in 159 swings with 25 miscues.
- The Blazers had two double-doubles with a match-high 17 kills from senior Chloe' Chubilleau and 12 digs, while Powell added 16 digs and 10 kills.
- Limestone was led by Williams with 14 kills on 30 swings as she hit .400 for the match.
UP NEXT:
- The Blazers return to action Saturday with a pair of matches, beginning at 8:30 a.m. against North Greenville and at 12:30 against Mars Hill to complete the tournament.
- VSU then returns home to open Gulf South Conference play Tuesday at 7 p.m. at The Complex versus Shorter.
