THE LEAD: After a scoreless first half, No. 9 West Florida scored three goals in the second half for a 3-0 win over Valdosta State Sunday afternoon as the Blazers fall in the upset bid.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- UWF dominated the attack much of the first half, but the VSU defense was up to the challenge each time.
- The Blazers had a great opportunity late in the half as senior Suvi Savolainen had a great look at the top of the box as UWF goalkeeper Esthefanny Barreras came up with a great diving save to preserve the scoreless game.
- In the second half, the Argos got the breakthrough goal as Jessic Quixley scored off an assist from Sam Waarum off a corner kick for a 1-0 lead at the 59:42 mark.
- Just under two minutes later, Quixley found the back of the net as Waarum assisted once again for a 2-0 lead.
- The Argos added the third score in the 67th minute as Lee Ducharme scored off an assist from Isabella Garcia-Salas.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- UWF had eight shots with five on frame in the first half on a very hot and humid South Georgia day.
- Savolainen had the one shot for the Blazers.
- VSU had one corner kick and UWF had for set pieces.
- For the match the Blazers had six shots with five in the second half, while UWF had 19 shots and 10 on frame.
- UWF had nine corner kicks, while VSU had one.
