THE LEAD: The Valdosta State women's soccer team started fast and blanked visiting Spring Hill College 3-0 Friday evening at the Soccer Complex. VSU used two first half goals from junior Ashley Lewis en route to the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- · After two bad clears by the Badgers deep in their own territory, the Blazers capitalized as junior Ashley Lewis was on the receiving end of a senior Carley Montgomery pass for a goal just 1:06 into the match. It was Lewis' team-leading fifth goal of the season.
- · Off a corner kick from senior Suvi Savolainen, Lewis scored her second goal of the half at the 35:30 mark for a 2-0 lead.
- · Early in the second half, senior Mallory McDaniel scored off an assist from Lewis for a 3-0 lead at the 51:04 mark.
- · The Blazers had another great look with a foul in the box as all 11 Badgers were toed the goal line, but the VSU shot sailed high.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- · For the first half, VSU had 11 shots with five on goal as Lewis had five shots with four on goal and the two scores.
- · Freshman Samantha Blanford had three saves for the Blazers.
- · Spring Hill's Caroline Lewis had two of the Badgers' five shots and both were on frame. Badger goalkeeper Grace Riley had three saves in the half.
- · VSU converted on its one corner kick in the half.
- · For the match, VSU tallied 20 shots with 10 on frame, two corner kicks.
- · Sophomore Caroline Embler relieved Blanford for the final 25:24 combining for the shutout.
- · Blanford (3-0) earned her third-straight win.
- · Lewis led the game with eight shots, six on frame two goals and one assist.
- · Spring Hill had five shots and three on goal for the match.
