VALDOSTA, Ga. - An eventful day at Steel's Diamond led to the celebration of a Senior Day sweep (6-5, 5-2) over the Shorter Hawks in Gulf South Conference action on Saturday in TitleTown, USA.
The Blazers jumped on the Hawks early in game one with a first inning run, thanks to the aggressive base running of senior Jessica Mohl. The leadoff hitter walked to start the bottom of the first and advanced on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Mohl tagged up from second on a fly ball to left, and an errant throw by Abi Valdes allowed the fleet-footed Blazer to cross and give VSU a 1-0 lead.
After the Blazers coughed up the lead in the top of the second, freshman Cassey Cornelius sent the first pitch of the bottom half of the frame into the gap in right center field for a double. Logan Hill moved her up with a sacrifice bunt, and Daniel Patterson followed with an RBI single through the left side. Two batters later, Tana McDaniel, who had walked earlier in the half inning, came around to score on an infield error by the Hawks.
Valdosta State added another run in the bottom of the fifth, but Shorter returned fire and reclaimed a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth with four runs on five hits, including Kaylee Combs' second homer of the day.
Trailing by one in the bottom of the seventh, Mohl tried to lay down a bunt in an effort to reach as the potential tying run. She fouled the pitch off, but on the next swing the senior belted a solo shot over the left center field wall to tie the game at 5-5 and send the contest to extra frames.
Kameron Coggins and Kathryn Carter teamed up for 3.1 innings of scoreless relief work for Valdosta State down the stretch, which set the stage for Brandy Morgan's heroics in the bottom of the ninth. Morgan came to the plate with two away and sent Payton Lippert's first offering over the left field wall to win the game. The homer for the Jasper native marked the 50th of her career.
With a buzz in the park heading into game two, the seniors struck again, as Morgan teamed up with Heather Robinson for back-to-back RBI's in the third. One inning later, Logan Hill blasted her fifth homer of the year, and Mohl put the exclamation point on the day later in the inning with her second long ball of the afternoon to give VSU a 5-1 advantage.
Carter, who came on in relief for the second straight game, picked up wins in both contests to improve to 13-3 on the season, and the Blazers improved to 35-9 overall and 21-7 against league opponents with the victory. Meanwhile, Shorter fell to 16-23 and saw their league record drop to 11-17.
Head Coach
Thomas Macera, who tallied his 800th win as a collegiate head coach earlier this season, netted his 600th win at Valdosta State with the pair of wins.
Valdosta State will return to action for the final game of the weekend on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park.
