Wolves Score Late to Edge Out Baseball, 9-6

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Valdosta State baseball team saw a two-run lead slip away in the late innings of Saturday's Gulf South Conference series finale, as the Wolves of West Georgia scored a combined five runs in the seventh and eighth to claim a 9-6 victory in Carrollton, Ga.

The Wolves took the series with the win and improved to 24-16 overall, 11-13 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Blazers fell to 14-24 overall and dropped to 8-15 against league opponents.

Valdosta State fell behind 3-0 after the first four innings, but a big four-run fifth lifted the Blazers back on top for a 4-3 advantage. With two outs and one aboard in the fifth, BJ White reached on a fielding error at short. Kendall Herron, VSU's leadoff hitter, capitalized on the opportunity with a three run shot over the wall in right center field. DJ King struck out in the ensuing at bat, but for the second time in a half inning, a Blazer reached on strike three because of a wild pitch. Two additional wild pitches later, King moved all the way up to third, and Nick Koslowski delivered a clutch RBI single to put VSU up by one.

An RBI double by UWG center fielder Cade Marlowe in the bottom half of the same inning tied the game up at 4-4, but the Blazers scored on a wild pitch and an error in the top of the seventh to jump back on top for a 6-4 lead.

The Wolves proceeded to surge offensively in their final two plate appearances with six hits in the final two frames for two in the seventh and three in the eighth. The resulting lead was one that VSU was unable to negate.

The Blazers will return to action in non-conference play on Tuesday with a 3:00 p.m. matchup against Brewton Parker. The game will take place at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park.
