Blazers Torch Union in Doubleheader Sweep

JACKSON, Tenn. - Blazer softball outscored the Union Bulldogs 12-0 on Saturday to score a pair of Gulf South Conference wins (4-0, 8-0) on the road in Jackson, Tenn.

Valdosta State recorded four hits in the opening game, all of which were doubles, to notch the game one victory. Following an error in the second that allowed Lacey Crandall to reach with two outs, Cassey Cornelius and Tana McDaniel delivered back-to-back doubles to put VSU on top 2-0.

Jessica Mohl put the finishing touches on the win with a two-run double in the seventh, which gave Kasie Johnson more than enough to collect the victory and improve to 8-2 on the season. The victory lowered Johnson's ERA to 1.82 and marked her fourth shutout of the season. In addition, the junior now has eight complete games on the year.

The Blazer offense jumped all over the Bulldogs in game two with eight first inning runs. In the opening frame, VSU sent 12 hitters to the plate and capitalized on five timely hits, including a grand slam by Valdosta, Ga. native and Georgia Christian School graduate Haley Garrett. Garrett's mammoth homer, which cut through the wind and landed well beyond the left field wall, marked her first of the season and represented one of five extra base hits out of VSU's seven total hits in the game.

With the eight-run spot before she ever even stepped in the circle, Kathryn Carter took over and pitched around eight Bulldog hits to record her first shutout of the season. Carter, now 10-3 on the year, notched her sixth complete game and pulled her ERA down to 2.59 with the 5-inning victory.

The No. 24 ranked Blazers improved to 26-7 overall on the season and bumped their conference record up to 12-5. Union fell to 9-17 on the year and saw their conference record fall to 4-12.

The Blazers will close out the weekend series in Jackson, Tenn. on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. EST. The game will be carried live via links available at www.vstateblazers.com.
