ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Valdosta State baseball team suffered a tough loss to Flagler in a low-scoring 3-1 affair on the road at Drysdale Field in St. Augustine, Fla. on Friday.
Logan Dubbe delivered six scoreless innings for Valdosta State, before the Saints used two singles and a double to overcome a 1-0 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Later in the frame, after Dubbe was replaced by Colton Chuppe, Flagler's Dillon Reed added a triple to plate one additional insurance run and put Flagler on top 3-1.
Carson McCullers gave the Blazers a base hit in the top of the ninth, but that was all VSU could muster offensively over the final two innings against Ethan Jones, who earned his first save of the year with two innings pitched in relief of winner Robert Girgis.
Dubbe's strong outing was spoiled by Flagler's big seventh inning, and the Blazer senior was forced to claim the loss to fall to 0-1 on the young season. As a team, VSU fell to 2-4, while the Saints improved to 3-1 overall.
Valdosta State's lone run came courtesy of Kendall Herron and Luke Suchon, who teamed up for a pair of base hits at the top of the sixth to put the Blazers on the board.
The Blazers will have a chance to rebound right away in a Saturday neutral game against Florida Tech. First pitch is slated for 11:00 a.m. in St. Augustine, Fla.
