Strong Pitching Effort Gives Blazer Baseball 2-0 Win Over FIT

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Valdosta State baseball team used a sparkling collective pitching performance to pick up a 2-0 non-conference win over Florida Tech on Saturday afternoon in St. Augustine, Fla.

Starter Sean Gabel allowed just three hits over six innings and struck out seven of the 21 batters he faced to hold the Panthers at bay through six innings. Valdosta State gave Gabel one run in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to a Luke Suchon RBI, which proved to be the game winner.

Gabel turned the game over to a contingent of three Blazer pitchers, including Matt Weidenbach, Cooper Cain, and Quinton Forrester. The trio held Florida Tech hitless throughout the final three innings and allowed just two baserunners on a pair of walks.

The Blazers added one additional insurance run in the bottom of the seventh after Aaron Haughton sparked the frame with a leadoff double down the left field line, and after advancing on an Elias Macias sacrifice bunt, Haughton crossed by way of an infield error by FIT's Ryan Sinzenich.

The pair of runs in the sixth and seventh were more than enough for the Blazers to improve to 3-3 overall on the season. Meanwhile, Florida Tech fell to 1-4. Gabel picked up the win for the Blazers, and Forrester notched his first save of the year after closing out the game in the top of the ninth.

Valdosta State will continue the 2018 campaign on Sunday with an 11:00 a.m. matchup against Wingate in St. Augustine, Fla. Look for live coverage right here at www.vstateblazers.com.
