Women's Basketball Defeats AUM; Clinches Playoff Spot

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Lady Blazers explosive fourth quarter led them to a 62-50 victory over the Lady Warhawks of Auburn Montgomery in Saturday's road matchup in Montgomery, Ala.

The contest started off in favor of AUM, as they controlled the floor and quickly led the Blazers 18-12 after the first quarter of play. However, Valdosta State's defense came alive in the second quarter, as they held the Lady Warhawks to only 6 points before the half. Still, Valdosta State trailed Auburn Montgomery 23-24 at the break, thanks in part to 17 first half turnovers.

The Lady Blazers picked up momentum right away at start of the third, however, as Taylor Buie sank a three on VSU's first possession. Madi Mitchell proceeded to put on another spectacular offensive performance the rest of the way for the red and black, draining 17 second half points en route to 25 overall. The senior earned her 10th double-double of the season, as she pulled down 11 boards on the afternoon.

Maddy Corazza and Kenya Samone' Dixon delivered another strong outing for the Lady Blazers. Corazza, who had a career-best performance Thursday night against West Georgia with 15 points, racked up 13 in the game, while Samone' Dixon added nine.

Valdosta State's fourth quarter performance secured the victory for VSU, as they outscored AUM 23-14 to cap off another win and secure a playoff spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament, which is set to open up on February 27th.

With the win, VSU improved to 18-7 in regular season play, and the Lady Blazers remained in a tie for third place at 12-5 in the conference. Meanwhile, the Lady Warhawks dropped to 8-16 overall and 4-13 in the GSC.

Moving forward, Valdosta State turns their attention to the Montevallo Falcons, who they will face in a road matchup slated for 7:00 p.m. EST on February 14th in Montevallo, Ala.
