VALDOSTA, Ga. – Following its thrilling 47-31 victory over No. 3 West Georgia Saturday evening, the No. 5 Valdosta State football team learned it is the top seed in NCAA Super Region Two and will receive a first round bye in the upcoming NCAA Division II Football Championship as the selection show was announced Sunday evening.
The Blazers, who capped their first undefeated regular season at 10-0 since 2002, earned their first Gulf South Conference title since 2010 and will make their 15
th appearance in the NCAA postseason in 2018. VSU has a 22-12 in the NCAA Tournament with three national championships (2004, 2007 and 2012).
VSU will await the winner of the No. 4-5 matchup between Bowie State (Md.) and West Alabama as that game will be this Saturday. Also this coming Saturday will be the No. 2-7 matchup between West Georgia and Wingate (N.C.), while the No. 3-6 match up features Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) and Florida Tech.
The Blazers will host the second round game, Nov. 24 at 1 p.m. at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. Tickets will go on sale at 9 a.m. Monday morning in the VSU Athletic Ticket Office, or by calling 229-333-SEAT.
VSU last hosted a playoff game in 2016 with a 24-21 loss to UNC-Pembroke in the first round. If the Blazers were to win on Nov. 24, they also would host the regional final on Dec. 1 at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
The National Semifinals are scheduled for Dec. 8 at sites to be determined based on reseeding of the remaining four teams and the 2018 National Championship is Dec. 15 in McKinney, Texas, at McKinney ISD Stadium.
