THE LEAD: Three goals in a span of 12:50 minutes in the second half sparked the Valdosta State women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory at West Georgia Sunday afternoon. Three different Blazers scored goals in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- VSU and UWG played to a scoreless first half as the Blazers had the early advantage with a barrage of shots in the seventh minute.
- UWG goalkeeper Jackie Donaldson was up to the task, but later in the half VSU had back-to-back shots blocked by the Wolves.
- The Wolves had a good look as Katie Mitchell fired, but VSU sophomore Caroline Embler made the save.
- On the final play of the half, senior Suvi Savolainen fired on frame, but Donaldson made the save to preserve the 0-0 score.
- VSU came out firing in the second half and had four shots in the first 15 minutes of the half.
- Lewis scored off an assist from senior Mallory McDaniel on a header cross for a 1-0 lead at the 61:39 mark.
- Off a bad clearance from the Wolves, freshman Lauren Hicks ound the back of the net at the 68:38 mark and a 2-0 lead as sophomore Lexie Hall had the assist.
- Paterson scored her first goal of the season and fifth of her career as McDaniel had the assist one again at the 72:29 mark.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- VSU held an 8-5 lead in shots in the first half as UWG had two saves in the opening stanza and one for the Blazers. VSU had the lone corner kick in the half.
- The Blazers dominated the second half with 13 shots in the frame and 21 shots for the game with nine on goal.
- It was Lewis' fourth game winner of the season, while McDaniel picked up her second assist of the year.
- Embler had three saves in the match for her fourth win of the season (4-4) and third clean sheet of the year.
- UWG ended with 10 shots and three on goal.
- Lewis had eight shots with four on frame to pace the Blazers, while Donaldson made six saves for the Wolves. She entered the match with a 0.87 goals against average, while her 0.872 save percentage ranked 25thnationally. She has played every minute this season for UWG.
- The three goals were the most UWG has allowed this season.
- VSU evened the all-time series with UWG 4-4-2 and snapped a three-match skid against the Wolves.
