THE LEAD: The Valdosta State women's soccer team closed the 2018 home regular season slate with a 2-0 victory over visiting Christian Brothers Sunday afternoon. VSU posted both goals in the first half and had a couple of great looks in the second.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Just 3:14 into the match, VSU was awarded a free kick from about 30 yards out and sophomore Paige Taylor took the kick as it bounced in front of CBU goalkeeper Riley Chafin who miss timed her jump as it went over her head into the net for a 1-0 lead.
- Later in the half, junior Riley Tennant got a great pass from freshman Lauren Hicks and Tennant beat Chafin for a 2-0 lead at the 24:57 mark. It was Tennant's sixth score of the year.
- Prior to the game, VSU honored three seniors playing in their regular season home game in Carley Montgomery, Suvi Savolainen and Mallory McDaniel.
- In the second half, the Bucs tried to press more and both teams had shots off the bar and post in the frame.
- CBU's Bobbie Willis had a great look at the 67:04 mark, but VSU sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Embler was up to the task for the save.
- Moments later, in transition, McDaniel put one off the crossbar and later had a header where Chafin made the save.
- Late in the match, CBU had looks with one shot being blocked and a save from Embler on the other.
