VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State women's basketball team overcame a slow offensive start at The Complex on Friday night in Valdosta, Ga. to topple the Warhawks of Auburn-Montgomery in a 57-43 Gulf South Conference win.
With the victory, the Lady Blazers added to a perfect 9-0 record at home this season and improved to 12-6 on the season overall. In conference play, VSU bumped up to 6-4. The Warhawks fell to 7-10 overall after the loss and saw their record against GSC opponents drop to 3-7.
The Lady Blazers connected on just 8-of-26 from the field during the first half, but seven of those eight buckets were three pointers. As a result, Valdosta State was able to outscore the Warhawks 25-17. Valdosta State turned up the heat offensively in the second half and ran away with the contest, thanks to 12 field goals on 20 attempts for a 60.0 percent shooting percentage after intermission.
Madi Mitchell delivered yet another double-double with a team-high 18 points and 13 rebounds. The senior shot 6-of-11 from the floor and buried each of her six free throws. Not to be outdone, fellow senior
Kenya Samone' Dixon added a double-double of her own with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman
Kayla Bonilla added to the mix, matching a season-high 12 points.
Valdosta State will return to action at The Complex to host the rival Wolves of West Georgia on Sunday. Tip time is slated for 2:00 p.m. in Valdosta, Ga.
