LAKELAND, Fla. - The Valdosta State soccer teamed matched Florida Southern shot for shot in non-conference women's soccer action on Wednesday night, but the Mocs escaped with a 2-1 win as the clock reached zero in Lakeland, Fla.
In an effort to give his normal starters a rest, Head Coach
Stephen Andrew elected to extend his roster in the non-conference matchup. Valdosta State responded positively early in the match and drew first blood when
Riley Tennant connected from 18-feet out in the center after receiving a pass from
Ava Scott-Moncrief in the 12th minute. The goal marked Tennant's third of the year and gave the Blazers an early 1-0 advantage.
Although the Blazers were able to fire off 13 more shots in the contest, four of which were on goal, none were allowed past the two-man tandem of Paige Koetter and Helena Nordstrom, who each spent one half in goal.
As the match unfolded, Florida Southern did the remainder of the scoring, and all of it came it the first half. Chloe Hamm was the first to score in the 20th minute with a finish on a cross from Alexa Moberley from the right corner. With the match tied at 1-1, Anna Griessler scored the deciding goal with just over ten minutes to play in the first period.
With the loss, the Blazers fell to 5-3 on the season. Meanwhile, the Mocs improved their overall record to 3-1-1.
Next up for the Blazers, it's a Gulf South Conference showdown against Spring Hill on Friday at 5:00 p.m, at The VSU Soccer Complex. Live coverage will be available at www.vstateblazers.com.
