Softball Tames Lions With Two Saturday Wins

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State softball team celebrated Senior Day in fine fashion on Saturday afternoon in Valdosta, Ga., as the Blazers took down North Alabama twice (4-3, 8-0) in a critical doubleheader sweep at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park.

With the wins, Valdosta State improved to 20-12 in Gulf South Conference play and will enter the season finale on Sunday in a head-to-head competition against the Lions with the No. 4 GSC Tournament seed on the line. The pair of victories for VSU lifted the team to 35-16 overall, while UNA dropped to 35-16 overall and 20-12 against league opponents.

A series of Valdosta State errors in game one resulted in two unearned runs for the Lions and nearly cost Kathryn Carter (16-3) a win. Brandy Morgan took matters into her own hands in the bottom of the eighth inning, however, when she practically erased three prior strikeouts in the game with a two-run walkoff home run to give the Blazers a 4-3 victory.

In game two, Blazer pitcher Kasie Johnson (6-4) joined the Blazer offense for a completely dominant VSU performance. Johnson held the Lions to just two hits in the game, while Jessica Mohl and senior Chelsea Canara teamed up to fuel VSU's offensive explosion with a combined 6-for-7 effort in the top two spots of the lineup.

Canara delivered the biggest swing of the day for Valdosta State, after she returned from being hit by a pitch in the first inning to club a second inning grand slam. The four-run blast put the Blazers on top 6-0 after just two innings of play and played a large role in the early exit of UNA starter Hillary Carpenter, who took the loss and fell to 14-7 on the season.

Sunday's series finale is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start at Steel's Diamond.
