Union Spoils Opening Day of Weekend Baseball Series

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State baseball team dropped the first two of a three-game weekend Gulf South Conference series against Union, after the Bulldogs outlasted the Blazers (2-1, 5-2) for a doubleheader sweep on Saturday at the newly renamed Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park in Valdosta, Ga.

After five innings of scoreless baseball in game one, the Blazers struck first to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth after Kendall Herron led off the inning with a triple, and Tyler Morris drove him in with a pinch hit single just two batters later.

Unfortunately for the Blazers, the pair of hits represented just two of four for Valdosta State against Union's JR Miller, and Hunter Jones' overall impressive outing on the hill was spoiled just one half inning later on a two-run double by Zach Wylie.

Wylie's hit marked one of just four for Union in the game, but the two runs were enough for Miller, who picked up the victory and improved to 4-0 on the year. Despite 12 strikeouts in just six innings of work, the two runs were enough to edge out the win against Jones, resulting in the junior's first loss of the season and a drop to 3-1.

In game two, Blazer hurler Austin Hamilton picked up where he left off last weekend with a pair of strikeouts to start the game. A hit batsman during the following at-bat proved to be costly, however, as cleanup hitter Dylan Moore swung for a two-run homer and gave his Bulldogs a two-run spot with just one swing of the bat in the top half of the first.

Valdosta State returned fire with a pair of solo shots off the bats of Ryan Slaughter and Morris, but the two hits were all the Blazers could muster against Teddy Christie. Christie benefited from the game's decisive run in the top of the fifth inning and was afforded the victory to improve to 6-1 on the year after David Robins struck for a solo homer to lead off the frame.

Hamilton fell to 3-3 following the loss, and the Blazers fell to 16-9 overall. Valdosta State moved to 8-6 in conference play, while UU improved to 20-5 overall and lifted their GSC record to 9-4 to catapult into second place.

The Blazers will seek retaliation in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m in Valdosta.
