VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Blazer offense came alive on Sunday to rack up nine hits en route to a 10-3 rout of the Union Bulldogs in the Gulf South Conference series finale at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park.
Blazer starter
Troy Massaro used a solid 5.2 innings of work on the hill to hold the Bulldogs in check and claim the win to improve to 3-0 on the season. The only sour inning came in the third, when one hit and a pair of errors resulted in Union's only three runs of the game, all of which were unearned.
Valdosta State nullified Union's three tallies with two runs in both the second and fourth innings, a stretch highlighted by a pair of RBI doubles in the fourth inning by
Dalton Murray and
Clint Carr. The fourth inning surge gave the Blazers a 4-3 lead, but Valdosta State piled on later in the game with a monstrous bottom half of the seventh. In the half inning, Carr added to his big day with a two-run single before
Kendall Herron capped off the inning with a double down the left field line to drive in two and put VSU on top 10-3.
Murray, Herron, and Carr teamed up to drive in eight of VSU's ten runs in the game, with four of those RBI's belonging to Carr. The trio also swung for two hits each to help fuel the Blazer offense throughout the day and force Bulldog starter Skyler Harrison to fall to 2-1 with his first loss of the 2017 season.
Massaro's pitching performance was complemented by three scoreless innings of work by
Roman Donofro and
Beau Blair, who teamed up for the final 3.1 innings of the game and allowed just one hit. In Blair's two innings of work, the righty struck out five of the six batters he faced to improve his strikeout total to 27 in just 21.0 innings pitched.
The Blazers improved to 17-9 on the season overall and 9-6 in GSC play, while the Bulldogs fell to 20-6 on the year and 9-5 against league opponents.
Valdosta State's next matchup will be a non-conference showdown with the Tampa Spartans in Tampa, Fla. on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m., with live coverage available right here at www.vstateblazers.com.
