Softball Sweeps Day Two of NFCA Leadoff Classic

CLEARWATER, Fla. The Valdosta State softball team picked up a pair of wins on day two of the NFCA Leadoff Classic with a 6-0 win over Texas A&M - Commerce, followed by an 11-0 rout of Tiffin in Clearwater, Fla.

The victories lifted VSU to 6-2 on the season and marked Valdosta State's third win in their last four games. Meanwhile, TAMC fell to 6-2 and Tiffin dropped to 0-2 on the season.

Valdosta State jumped on the Lions early in the bottom half of the first inning, as Jessica Mohl slapped a single back through the middle and stole second base to set the stage for Chelsea Canara. Canara delivered with a follow up single to drive in Mohl and push the Blazers out to an early 1-0 lead.

Two innings later, Tara McIntyre sparked a three-run third with a leadoff triple. In the ensuing at-bat, Mohl plated McIntyre with a single, and Hayley Cruthers followed up with an RBI double to left field. One batter later, Taylor Hartenbach brought Cruthers in to score with a single to end the scoring in the third.

Valdosta State's final two runs of the game came in the next inning, after Lacey Crandall led the inning off with a single and Haley Garrett followed with a walk. Amber Kling came on to pinch run for Crandall, and both Kling and Garrett scored later in the inning on a two-out double by Canara, who boosted her RBI total to double-digit figures on the young season.

Avery Lamb delivered her second straight complete-game shutout after scattering eight hits and striking out two over the course of her seven innings of work. Lamb has now thrown 17 consecutive scoreless innings, and she improved her record to a perfect 4-0 on the season following Saturday's win.

In game two, Kathryn Carter notched her first win of the season with a complete-game shutout, in which she allowed just five hits throughout five innings pitched.

Carter received plenty of help from the Blazer offense, which kicked off the matchup with a staggering nine-run first inning that included four hits and one error. Tiffin issued five walks and a hit batsman in the inning to boost the Blazers, who scored their first two runs of the game on a two-run double off the bat of Hartenbach. McIntyre, Cruthers, and Crandall also tallied RBI's in the inning to give Carter a 9-0 cushion before she ever even entered the circle.

Mohl, Valdosta State's leadoff hitter, closed out the day with four hits in six at-bats, along with a walk and three stolen bases. Meanwhile, Canara racked up four RBI's on the day with three hits in five at-bats.

The Blazers will close out the final day of the tournament with an 11:30 a.m. Sunday showdown against Catawba. The game marks VSU's last before the start of Gulf South Conference play, which begins for VSU against Christian Brothers on February 18th in Memphis, Tenn.
