VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State women's basketball team scored a season-high 93 points en route to a dominant 93-70 victory over the Montevallo Falcons on Saturday afternoon in Valdosta, Ga.
The Falcons delivered the first successful shot of the game on the first possession of the game, but the Lady Blazers fired back with 10 unanswered points. From that moment on, Valdosta State completely controlled the contest with a 48.6 percent shooting effort that included 33 field goals on 70 attempts. In contrast, the VSU defense held the Falcons to just 36.2 percent from the floor.
The offensive onslaught from Valdosta State included 18 points from both
Madi Mitchell and
Aaliyah Cheatham, with Cheatham's performance marking her highest point total since VSU's season opener on November 11th. In addition,
Kenya Samone' Dixon poured in 17 points and hauled in 12 rebounds for her 7th double-double of the season.
While committing just 12 turnovers in the contest, Valdosta State topped Montevallo in nearly every major statistical category, including offensive rebounds (19), defensive rebounds (25), assists (19), steals (9), and free throws (19). Valdosta State enjoyed another balanced effort from its roster, as 10 different players put points on the board and 11 different players secured at least one rebound.
Valdosta State improved to 7-3 with the victory, and the win shifted the Lady Blazers' Gulf South Conference record to 1-1 on the year. The Falcons fell to 2-8 on the season and were left searching for their first GSC victory at 0-3 in conference play.
