Blazer Soccer Takes Down No. 24 Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Valdosta State soccer team landed a huge victory on the road after taking down the No. 24 ranked Lee Flames with a 1-0 win on Friday night in Cleveland, Tenn.

The win marked just the second conference loss of the season for the Flames and propelled the Blazers into fourth place in the league standings. With the win, VSU improved to 7-3-1 overall and 5-2-1 in conference play. Meanwhile, Lee, who entered the weekend as the No. 3 ranked team in the South Region, fell to 7-4 overall and 6-2 against GSC opponents.

The only score of the match came when sophomore Riley Tennant used a pass from freshman defender Paige Taylor to score her fifth goal of the season on a header in the 35th minute. The goal marked the 27th of the season for Valdosta State, which currently ranks the Blazers among the top two scoring teams in the Gulf South Conference.

The story of the night though, was the performance of goalkeeper Alyssa Curtis. Curtis, who had not played in a match since September 17th, stepped in for an ailing Caroline Embler and took complete control of the match. The Flames tested the senior all night with 17 shots and eight on goal, but Curtis was up to the task and racked up eight saves to pick up the critical shutout.

Valdosta State will see a quick turnaround this weekend and will return to action in Rome, Ga. on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. The contest against Shorter was originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon, but the threat of poor weather resulted in a schedule change.
