Soccer Ties with No. 23 Argonauts

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The VSU Lady Blazers soccer team battled the rain Sunday afternoon as they endured a GSC matchup in Pensacola, Fla. against the nationally ranked West Florida Lady Argonauts. The intensity of this matchup was evident throughout the 90 minutes of regulation and the 2 overtime periods, which resulted in a draw between the Lady Blazers and the No. 23 Lady Argonauts.

The Lady Blazers struck first, scoring in the seventh minute from none other than the dynamic duo of Jordan Humbert and Ashley Lewis. Humbert corner kick found its way to the back of the net off the head of Lewis for VSU's first goal on the day. Lewis currently leads the Gulf South Conference in goals. The Lady Blazers struck again in the 32nd minute of the match with yet another goal off a header by Taylor Snell, assisted by Paige Taylor. The Blazers dominated the first half of play, leading 2-0 going into halftime, and outshooting the Argos 6-4.

Freshmen Caroline Embler displayed another solid performance as she ended the day with 7 saves off of 17 total shots by the Argonaut offense.

The Argonauts came out with a vengeance in the second half, scoring just 46 seconds into the half. This goal came off the foot of Jessica Quixley, one of 8 shots that the UWF had on goal in the second half. UWF maintained possession of the ball for a good majority of the half and the equalizer came in the 75th minute off of a corner kick by the Lady Argonauts. UWF utilized the cross and found the back of the net to even up the score at 2-2. The Argonauts held the Blazers to just two shots in the second half, resulting in an overtime showdown.

Things remained neck and neck in the 20 minutes of overtime as both VSU and UWF defenses shut down one and other to only one shot on goal a piece. The match ended in a 2-2 draw and brought the Lady Blazers record to 6-3-1.

Next up, VSU will make the trek to Cleveland, Tenn. this Friday, October 6th, for another GSC matchup against the Lady Flames of Lee University. Look for live coverage right here at vstateblazers.com!
