VALDOSTA, Ga. – A sizzling second half offensive performance allowed the Valdosta State men's basketball team to run away from the Mississippi College Choctaws in the second half for a 103-79 rout on Saturday evening in Valdosta, Ga.
The Blazers were firing on all cylinders in The Complex, particularly in the second half, during which Head Coach
Mike Helfer's club buried 19-of-23 field goals for a remarkable 75-percent shooting exhibition. Seven of the 19 shots were three pointers, resulting in a 7-of-10, 70 percent effort from long range, and VSU also drilled 9-of-12 attempts from the free throw line.
The second half surge pushed the Blazers to a season-high 59.7 shooting percentage in the game, and 19 of VSU's 103 points came from the free throw line. Valdosta State has now shot 50 percent or better from the field in eight games this season, and the team has shot 40 percent or better in each game of their current six-game winning streak.
Jeremiah Hill anchored the team with 27 points on the attack, with
Josh Lemons and
Jimmy Kodet adding 17 and 15 points, respectively. Hill also added seven assists and six rebounds for team leads in both categories, and the Blazers completely dominated the boards with 33 rebounds against MC's 21.
With the victory, Valdosta State improved to 14-3 overall and 9-2 in conference play, adding to their best start in over five years. Mississippi College's woes continued, as they fell to 4-11 overall and 1-10 against conference opponents.
