Soccer Drops Heartbreaker in 1-0 Overtime Loss

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Valdosta State defense put together another strong performance in Gulf South Conference action on Friday night, but extra minutes led to a devastating 1-0 loss to Alabama-Huntsville in the first minute of overtime in Huntsville, Ala.

Alyssa Curtis and the VSU backs held the Chargers scoreless for 90 minutes in the contest, but Melody Hoernschemeyer needed just 21 seconds after the first overtime whistle blew to strike for her second goal of the season.

The Blazers showed dramatic improvement on offense in the match and pressured the Chargers throughout the night with 12 shots and seven shots on goal. Freshman Megan Muffley accounted for two of the shots on goal in the match, while Kayla Robles, Logan Lindy, Riley Tennant, Aubree Denton, and Ava Scott-Moncrief each delivered a shot of their own.

Curtis racked up five saves overall before giving up the final goal, while Larae Breaux turned away seven shots on the night to pick up the shutout.

With the loss, the Blazers fell to 0-4-1 on the season and 0-1-0 in GSC play. Meanwhile, the Chargers picked up the victory to improve to 4-1-0 on the year and open up GSC action at 1-0-0.

Valdosta State now turns their attention to their next GSC matchup, a 2:00 p.m. showdown against the Tigers of West Alabama. The game will take place in Livingston, Ala. with live coverage available at www.vstateblazers.com.
