CLINTON, Miss. - The Valdosta State volleyball team opened up Gulf South Conference play on a high note with a dominant 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-9) victory over Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss. on Wednesday evening.
With the help of 33 assists by
Sara Dandridge, the Blazer offense outscored the Lady Choctaws 75-44 on the night and made quick work of their opponent en route to their second 3-0 sweep in less than a week.
Susanna Peonia fueled the attack for Valdosta State, as she has throughout the young season, with 14 kills against just 4 errors for a .345 hitting percentage. Meanwhile, freshman
Kayla Widera anchored the Blazers in the middle with 7 kills in 11 attempts. Widera did not commit a single error, which led to a team-high .636 effort on offense.
Defensively,
Sydney Chick continued her strong junior season with yet another double-digit effort in the dig column. Chick's 16 digs placed her just behind Peonia's 18-dig effort and just in front of Dandridge, who picked up 12 digs to complement her assist total and lead the sophomore to her first career double-double as a Blazer.
Valdosta State improved to 3-5 in the victory and opened up with a 1-0 record in conference play, while the Lady Choctaws fell to 6-3 overall and dropped their second straight conference matchup to place the team at 0-2 in the GSC.
