LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Valdosta State baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep (10-0, 6-2) at the hands of the No. 21 ranked West Alabama Tigers in Gulf South Conference baseball action in Livinsgston, Ala. on Saturday.
The Tigers cut game one short, thanks to a 10 run advantage after seven innings of play. A majority of the runs came in the third, when the Tigers sent nine batters to the plate and scored six runs on four hits. The big blow in the frame came from Adam Chamblee, who lifted a three-run homer over the left field wall.
Starter
Mitchell Cody, who fell to 2-2 on the year after the loss, was forced to exit in the third after walking two and allowing two singles. UWA's Evan Anderson collected the win to improve to 4-1 on the season.
In game two, the Blazers struck first after
Marcus Sigmon was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved up to third on a passed ball, and finally scored on a balk by starter Anthony Rosati.
The Tigers answered back quickly, however, after UWA right fielder Jake Bush clubbed a leadoff homer to right in the bottom of the same inning to lock the contest up at 1-1.
The deciding frame proved to be the fifth, when the Tigers plated four runs on four hits, including a three-run shot off the bat of Davis Aiken. Prior to the inning, Blazer starter
Kellan Bailey had allowed just three hits and did not allow a baserunner in the third or the fourth innings. The end result, however, proved to be a loss for Bailey, which dropped his record to 3-2 on the year.
Valdosta State's record fell to 11-8 overall and 4-4 in GSC play. Meanwhile, Rosati picked up his first win of the season to boost West Alabama to 14-4 overall.
The Blazers and Tigers conclude the three-game weekend set with a 1:00 p.m. EST start on Sunday afternoon in Livingston, Ala.
