Volleyball Bested In Five by Christian Brothers

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State volleyball team took Christian Brothers the distance, but the Lady Bucs used a strong defensive effort to best the Blazers 3-2 (26-24, 27-29, 16-25, 25-14, 8-15) at The Complex on Friday night in Valdosta, Ga.

The Gulf South Conference loss dropped the Blazers to 12-15 overall and 8-9 against conference opponents, while CBU lifted their record to 15-12 and 10-7 in league play.

The match consisted of tight competition early, which led to a 26-24 victory for the Blazers in the first set, followed by an extended 27-29 loss in the set number two. Christian Brothers carried their momentum into the third set for a lopsided victory, before the Blazers bounced back and held the Lady Bucs to just 14 points in the fourth set.

With the match on the line, the two teams went point for point in the opening moments to kick off the final set with a 4-4 tie. CBU used a kill by Erica Maurer, however, to spark an 11-4 run, which decided the contest.

CBU had four different players contribute on the attack with double digit figures in the kill column and were led by Emma Lenoir, who offset 17 attack errors with a team-high 18 kills. Meanwhile, Mary Kathryn Miller, Mollie Wadsworth, and Maurer racked up 16, 12, and 11 kills, respectively.

On the defensive side, Blythe Clausen highlighted CBU's night with a game-high 22 digs, and the Lady Bucs posted 15 blocks as a team.

Susanna Peonia delivered a double-double performance with 13 kills and 10 digs, while Sara Dandridge added a double-double of her own with 41 assists and a career-high 17 digs.

Valdosta State's will aim to keep their playoff hopes alive when they return to action for their final home game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at The Complex. The program will use the event to honor the 2016 seniors, with pregame festivities kicking off at 12:45 p.m.
