VALDOSTA, Ga. – Facing the league's top team in the form of Lee University, the Valdosta State soccer team gave the Flames all they wanted with two first half goals in a 4-2 Gulf South Conference loss on Thursday night at The VSU Soccer Complex in Valdosta, Ga.
Kayla Robles struck for both goals in the first half, beginning with an early opportunity on a long cross from
Mallory McDaniel from the far left sideline. Robles received the high, lofting serve in the 12
th minute and finished from close range on the right side with a header to beat the keeper and put the Blazers in front 1-0.
Lee quickly overcame the early deficit with two retaliatory goals just six minutes later. The pair of scores happened within two minutes of one another and gave the Flames a lead they would not relinquish throughout the remainder of the contest.
Robles' pair of scores, the second of which was made possible by a long assist from
Sabrina Magno, represented the senior defender's first two career goals.
Valdosta State fell to 1-11-4 overall following the loss and saw their GSC record fall to 1-7-3. Meanwhile, the Flames improved to 13-2-1 overall and 10-1-0 against conference opponents.
The Blazers return to The VSU Soccer Complex for their final match of the regular season on Saturday, October 29
th at 7:00 p.m. for a GSC showdown against the visiting Shorter Hawks. The match will serve as Senior Day, with a recognition ceremony planned for 6:45 p.m. in honor of 2016 Blazer Soccer Senior Class.
