VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State soccer team put together their strongest offensive effort of the season, but were forced to settle with a 2-2 Gulf South Conference draw against the Union Lady Bulldogs on Friday night in Valdosta, Ga. at The VSU Soccer Complex.
The Blazers pressured the Lady Bulldogs with an aggressive attack from the outset, leading up to an impressive strike from long distance by Ava Scott-Moncrief. The shot attempt sailed just out of the keeper's reach and struck the underside of the crossbar for the opening goal less than 20 minutes into the match.
Moncrief's score represented the only goal for either team in the first half, but it didn't take long for the Blazers to add on after intermission. Within three minutes after the start of the second half, Suvi Savolainen chipped in with another long strike to put VSU up 2-0.
Union fired back late in the contest, however, when Kayleigh Patterson pushed a shot through an Alyssa Curtis deflection during the 70th minute to narrow UU's deficit to 2-1.
The score brought the Lady Bulldogs within striking distance late in the contest, and Union took advantage of the opportunity with a game-tying, upper 90 strike in the 80th minute by Shelby High to tie the match up at 2-2 and force overtime.
Neither team was able to break through during the pair of overtime periods, resulting in the tie. Valdosta State moved to 1-9-3 on the season and 1-5-2 in conference play. Meanwhile, Union finished the night with a record of 4-4-4 overall and 4-2-3 in GSC action.
Valdosta State returns to action on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. matchup vs. the Lady Bucs of Christian Brothers at the VSU Soccer Complex.
