VALDOSTA, Ga. - With the exception of a minor hitch in the third set, the Valdosta State Blazers cruised to a 3-1 (26-24, 25-21, 23-25, 25-15) Gulf South Conference triumph over Mississippi College Lady Choctaws on a midweek, Wednesday night showdown in Valdosta, Ga.
The home matchup marked Valdosta State's third straight win and helped lift the Blazers to an 8-10 overall record and a 6-5 stint in conference play. The Lady Choctaws, meanwhile, fell to 8-11 overall and dropped to 1-10 against GSC opponents.
Valdosta State used one
Tristyn Sells' best offensive efforts of the season to get out to an early 2-0 set advantage over Mississippi College before Ashton King came alive in the third set to help MC fire back. The Blazers rebounded nicely, however, and delivered a .379 hitting performance as a team in the fourth and final set for a strong finish.
Sells closed out the match with a .308 percentage on the attack, which consisted of 13 kills and just five errors in 26 attempts. In addition,
Antia Rodriguez-Sanchez posted her third consecutive double-digit kill performance, and
Susanna Peonia just missed another double-double after racking up 12 kills and eight digs.
Blazer libero
Sydney Chick offered up 22 digs for Valdosta State, resulting in her fourth 20-plus dig performance in the last five matches. Chick, who also currently holds the GSC Defensive Player of the Week title, also contributed to the solid finish with five straight service points down the stretch.
Valdosta State's next challenge lies at the GSC/SSC Crossover Tournament, scheduled to take place in Orlando, Fla., beginning with Barry this Friday at 10:00 a.m. Look for results right here at www.vstateblazers.com, or follow us on Twitter (@BlazerAthletics), Facebook (Valdosta State Athletics), or Instagram (valdostastateathletics).
