VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State Lady Blazers scored a mid-season boost at home with a big 64-58 Gulf South Conference win over the rival Wolves of West Georgia on Saturday afternoon at The Complex in Valdosta, Ga.
A tight first half consisted of eight lead changes and two ties, with Valdosta State holding a three point advantage after outscoring the Wolves in both the first and second quarters.
Madi Mitchell paced the Blazers throughout the first half with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field. Mitchell's effort was supported by two three balls from
Jo Bistrow, along with seven first half rebounds by
Maggie Davis.
The Lady Blazers opened up the game with a triple in first two minutes from Mitchell, but the Wolves returned fire with two quick free throws and a bucket by sophomore A'Kia Harris. From that point forward the entire first half became a nip and tuck affair, in which West Georgia managed to keep the contest close, despite shooting just 9-of-26 for 34.6 percent prior to intermission.
The third quarter proved to be the difference in the contest, as the Mitchell continued to produce from the field and sparked a 16-7 run that helped open up a 44-32 lead for the Lady Blazers. The third-quarter surge allowed VSU to hold off the Wolves, who closed out the contest with 26 points in the fourth and final quarter.
Mitchell finished the game with a team-high 15 points, while Bistrow connected from long range four times en route to a 14-point afternoon. In addition, freshman
Aaliyah Cheatham tacked on 12 points to help bolster a 25-of-51, 49.0 percent shooting display by the red and black on the night.
With the victory, the Lady Blazers evened their season record up at 7-7 and improved their record in conference play to 3-6. Meanwhile the Wolves fell to 2-13 overall and saw their GSC record fall to 2-7.
Valdosta State will shoot for their second straight on Monday night at 6:00 p.m. at The Complex, as the Tigers of West Alabama come to town for another GSC matchup.
