Soccer Shuts Out Delta State in 1-0 Triumph

VALDOSTA, Ga. The Valdosta State soccer team returned to form on Sunday, using an early goal by Jordan Humbert to claim a 1-0 victory over the rival Lady Statesmen of Delta State on a warm afternoon at The VSU Soccer Complex in Valdosta, Ga.

Valdosta State evened up their conference record at 1-1 with the win and improved their overall record to 2-4 on the season. Meanwhile, Delta State's woes continued as they fell to 1-4-1 overall and suffered their third GSC loss to drop to 0-3 in league play.

The Blazers pressured DSU from the outset with several opportunities in the early going. Humbert made that pressure count at the 36:43 mark when she dribbled away from two defenders toward the middle before launching a 20 yard shot past Ravin Hosley and into the upper right corner.

"Kayla Robles played a great ball into my feet, and Coach Becks talked to us alot about taking people on and having confidence in yourself, so I took on the outside back and tried to use my speed to cut inside. When nobody stepped to me, I got a wide open look so I took the shot," said Humbert in description of her critical first half score.

Humbert's shot represented the only successful attempt of the day for Valdosta State, but with the shutout performance of McCall Gardner and VSU's defensive unit, the lone goal was all the Blazers would need. Gardner finished the match with three saves, one of which was a brilliant kick save from that turned away a one on one attempt by Catherine Thompson with just over three minutes to go in the first period.

Valdosta State's attack included 21 shots on the day, with five different players connecting for two or more shots. Kim Caitlin Alderman and Mallory McDaniel led the way with four shots each, while Humbert and Jade Reynolds both added three.

"This was huge today," added Humbert. "Our confidence was down, and we really needed a pick-me-up. This one means alot moving forward, and I think we're going to build on this and it's just going to continue."

The Blazers return to action on Friday, September 25th, as they welcome the Shorter Hawks to Valdosta for another Gulf South Conference matchup. The contest is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start and can be followed live at www.vstateblazers.com.
