VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State soccer team battled throughout a Friday night defensive struggle, but one second half goal proved to be the difference, as the Shorter Hawks left The VSU Soccer Complex with a 1-0 Gulf South Conference victory.
The Blazers pressured the Hawks continuously throughout the entirety of the first frame, but the flame red and black were seldom able to break through for shot attempts. Only 6 total shots were taken in the first period, four of which came from Valdosta State.
In the second half, Shorter used a long distance opportunity down the right sideline after the Blazers committed a foul in the 54
th minute. Jen Rogers took the shot and lifted an attempt just out of
McCall Gardner's reach into the upper net.
Despite outshooting the Hawks 7-4 on the night, the Blazers were unable to recover and fell to 2-5 overall on the season, 1-2 in league play. SU's victory boosted the team to 4-3 overall on the season and represented their first conference win of the year to even their GSC record up at 1-1.
Valdosta State hits the road this weekend to continue conference action in Cleveland, Tenn. on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
