Volleyball Outlasts West Alabama, 3-1

VALDOSTA, Ga. - Valdosta State volleyball continued their home winning streak on Saturday afternoon with a four-set Gulf South Conference win (22-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-20) over the rival Tigers of West Alabama at The Complex in Valdosta, Ga.

A scrappy West Alabama team gave Valdosta State a tough match, but the Blazers fought through to improve their record to 7-0 overall, 3-0 in GSC play. Meanwhile, the loss for the Tigers dropped the team to 2-8 overall and left the team searching for their first conference victory, as they fell to 0-3 in the GSC.

"I think we're a good team that knows when we need to fight," stated Susanna Peonia after the match. "Even if we don't have a great start, we always react well, which is a great thing that I think not a lot of teams can do."

The Tigers made the contest interesting from the outset with a 25-22 win in the first set after hitting .312 against Valdosta State's .184 effort. UWA trailed late in the frame 20-21, but two consecutive kills by Shanna Witt sparked a 5-1 run by the Tigers that helped them claim a 1-0 lead heading into the second frame.

From that point forward, however, the Blazer defense went to work. In the final three sets, Valdosta State's defensive stand included 63 of the team's 76 digs and eight of their nine blocks. The performance held West Alabama to a .076 hitting percentage and allowed VSU to take three straight to pick up the win.

Natalia Campos obliterated her previous career high with 28 digs in the contest. Prior to Saturday's effort, Campos had recorded 21 digs on four different occasions. The Lutz, Fla. native has tallied 10 or more digs in all seven matches this season and boosted her season average to 4.56 digs per set, which places her fourth on the GSC leaderboard. At the net, Peonia dazzled yet again with six blocks on defense and a team high .346 hitting percentage that included 13 kills in 26 attempts.

"I feel very confident right now," added Peonia, who has been a consistent force throughout the season so far for VSU. "My goal each match is to try and avoid mistakes, and even if we're not playing great, I want to work through that. I want to help my team, so either way I'm going to try and work the ball or put it down."

Next up for Valdosta State, the Blazers travel to Rome, Ga. to face Shorter on September 25th. The match is scheduled to tip off at 7:00 p.m., and live coverage will be available right here at www.vstateblazers.com.
