VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State soccer team put up a stingy defensive effort, but the Embry-Riddle Eagles managed to score once in each period to defeat the Blazers 2-0 on Thursday night at the VSU Soccer Complex.
With the loss, Valdosta State falls to 0-3 on the season, while the Eagles improved to a 3-0 record overall.
The Eagles took a 1-0 advantage midway through the first period after the reigning NAIA Player of the Year, Andrea Froshaug, took advantage of a one on one opportunity to bury the go-ahead shot into the right side of the net.
Inside the final four minutes of the first frame, the Eagles earned another clean look from the center of the 18-yard box, but Katherine Ebbs' strike was turned away, thanks to a brilliant deflection by Blazer keeper
McCall Gardner. The save was one of five for the senior on the night.
Gardner's effort kept the match in check until the 18:46 mark, when Valdosta State was charged with a foul inside the box, resulting in a successful penalty kick by Kyhla Branham which marked her first of the young season.
Valdosta State was held to just three shots on the night, but pressured the Eagles in the late minutes of the contest. The Blazers best opportunity of the night came with just under 11 minutes to play, as
Erin Hill offered up a corner kick to
Jade Reynolds. Reynolds connected for a threatening shot at close range, but the attempt was saved by ERU goalkeeper Olivia Lynch, who saved each of VSU's three attempts.
The Blazers return to action for their fourth straight home contest on Tuesday, September 15 against Clayton State. The match is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start at The VSU Soccer Complex.
