TIFTON, Ga. – Valdosta State hit four home runs in an 11-0 game one win and added four more in a 7-2 victory in game two as the Blazers swept a Gulf South Conference baseball doubleheader from Mississippi College at Stallions Field Friday afternoon.
With the sweep, Valdosta State secured its spot in the 2015 Gulf South Conference Tournament.
Valdosta State (27-16, 18-11) opened the game one scoring with a two-out RBI single by
Mike Reed in the bottom of the second inning before adding three more runs in the third.
Hayden Jones doubled to start the third before scoring when
Bryant Hayman singled. A
Kevin Cruz single put two runners on before
Jayk Graham reached on a bunt single. A throwing error on the bunt allowed both Hayman and Cruz to score for a 4-0 VSU lead.
The Blazers pushed their lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth when
Michael Gouge hit his ninth homer of the year with Reed on first while Jones followed with his seventh roundtripper of the year on the very next pitch.
Ryan Smith added his fourth home run of the year an inning later to push the VSU advantage to eight runs.
Hayman closed out the scoring bottom of the sixth inning when he hit his 12
th home run, with Reed and Jones on base, out to left.
Mitchell Cody allowed just five hits in the games and walked none while striking out five in a complete game to improve to 8-2. He allowed more than one base runner just once in the game, on a pair of two-out hits in the seventh, and needed just 84 pitches.
Jones was 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Hayman finished 2-for-3 with two scored and four driven in in the game. Reed also had two hits and also drew two walks while scoring two times as well.
Gouge's second home run of the day, a solo shot, in the bottom of the first inning put Valdosta State up 1-0 in game two before Mississippi College (12-33, 4-27) scored its first run of the day on two hits and an error in the top of the second.
Graham walked to open the bottom of the second and scored as Smith followed with a double off the wall in center field to put VSU back in front 2-1.
Jones added his eighth homer of the year with one out in the third inning to give the Blazers a two run advantage while the two teams traded runs in the fourth. Valdosta State pushed its lead to 6-2 in the fifth inning as
Jayk Graham homered with Hayman on first.
Jones hit his second homer of the game and third of the day in bottom of the sixth to close out the scoring.
Jones finished the game 3-for-4 with two driven in and Gouge had two hits and two driven in to lead VSU offensively. Hayman also had two hits in the game.
The two teams conclude the three game series with a single game beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Billy Grant Field Saturday. Valdosta State's 2015 senior class will be honored prior to the start of the game.
