VALDOSTA, Ga. – On Senior Day, senior
Bryant Hayman went three-for-three with two runs scored and two driven in to lead Valdosta State to a 13-3 Gulf South Conference baseball victory over Mississippi College at Billy Grant Field Saturday afternoon.
After rain delayed the start of the game by two hours, Valdosta State (28-18, 19-11) jumped out to a quick lead as it scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Mike Reed drew a walk to open the frame before
Michael Gouge singled and
Hayden Jones reached on an error to load the bases. Hayman followed with a single through the left-side of the infield to drive home both Reed and Gouge while Jones scored on a sacrifice fly by
Kevin Cruz.
Jayk Graham also singled in the inning to plate Hayman for the fourth run.
The game endured another 95 minute delay due to lightning in the middle of the second inning, the Blazers added three more runs to their lead in the third. Hayman tripled to open the frame and scored as Graham singled up the middle.
Ryan Smith followed with a double off the centerfield wall to score Graham and also came home when
Zac Goodno singled up the middle to make it 7-0 VSU.
Smith pushed the Blazer lead to 9-0 in the bottom of the fifth as he hit an opposite field home run to left with Graham on first before Mississippi College (12-34, 4-28) got five hits and took advantage of a Blazer error to score three runs in the top of the sixth.
Gouge hit his 11
th home run of the year with
Dominique Smedley on base in the sixth inning, during which Jones singled and scored on a Cruz sacrifice fly, while the Blazers closed out the game when Gouge singled home
Bobby Rice in the bottom of the seventh for the game's final run.
Gouge finished the game 3-for-4 with three driven in and two runs scored while Graham was also 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two driven in. Smith also drove in three runs in the game and scored twice while finishing with two hits.
Kellan Bailey pitched 6.0 innings and surrendered 10 hits and three runs, only one earned, as he improved to 5-2 on the season.
Valdosta State returns to action Tuesday, April 28 as it hosts Georgia College in non-conference action at Billy Grant Field beginning at 5:00 p.m.
