Baseball Falls 11-3 at No. 26 Columbus State

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Columbus State used a five-run third inning to defeat Valdosta State 11-3 in non-conference baseball action at Ragsdale Field Wednesday evening.

Valdosta State (25-16) opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when Jayk Graham opened the inning with a single and moved to third on a one-out double by Zac Goodno. B.J. Harmon proceeded to lay down a suicide squeeze bunt that allowed Graham to race home for a 1-0 VSU lead.

Columbus State (33-12) responded with all the offense it would need in the bottom of the third. Blaine Collins drew a walk to open the Cougar half of the third and scored as Jackson Oliver followed with a home run to right. Mike McClellan also drew a walk and Dustin Averett singled before a Crhis Daniel single drove McClellan home with a base hit. Two batters later, Chris Bowers singled home Averett while Blake Edwards loaded the bases with a single. Daniel also scored on a two-out ground out by Tim Massengale that put the Cougars in front 5-1.

The Blazers got back to within three runs when Ryan Smith hit his third home run of the year in the fourth inning, but CSU added two more runs in the sixth on a bases loaded fielder's choice and a wild pitch.

Massengale hit a two-run homer in the seventh to push the Columbus State lead to 9-2 while Bryant Hayman hit his 11th homer of the year in the eight for VSU's final run of the game. Kevin Manos drove home the final two Cougar runs of the game in the bottom of the inning as he added a two-run home run to center.

Graham was 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead Valdosta State offensively while Hayden Jones tallied two hits in five at-bats.

Valdosta State returns to action Friday, April 24th when it opens a three-game series against Gulf South Conference foe Mississippi College. The series, which was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday and Sunday, was moved up a day due to heavy rain moving into the area over the weekend and will begin with a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Friday followed by a single game at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
