GREENWOOD, S.C. – Jaime Phillips homered five times and
Huntyre Elling secured her first career no-hitter to help the Blazers put together a non-conference doubleheader sweep (12-0, 13-0) over the Lander Bearcats on Wednesday in Greenwood, S.C.
Phillips was a perfect 5-for-5 over the course of the day with each of those five hits being home runs. She was hit by a pitch once and walked twice to reach safely in each of her eight plate appearances and extended a four game hitting streak that includes 11 hits in 12 at-bats with seven round-trippers.
The Blazers extended their winning streak to 21 games with the pair of wins on Wednesday and improved their record to 31-2 overall, while the Bearcats fell to 10-16.
The Blazers totaled eight home runs on the day, as
Fran Johnson connected for two long balls, one of which was a grand slam, while
Jennifer Phillips got in on the action late in the second game with a screaming line drive that just cleared the right center field wall.
In the circle on the day, Elling produced a sparkling performance that held the Bearcats hitless and improved her season record to 8-0. Elling's only blemishes were three walks issued to Lander in the first two innings. In her last two appearances, Elling has allowed just one hit in eight innings of work with no runs allowed.
Game one belonged to
Caitlyn Calhoun who improved to 18-1 on the season and claimed her 18
th victory. Since her only loss of the season to Georgia College on February 1
st, the junior has hurled 17 consecutive complete games for wins, 10 of which have been shutouts.
The Blazer offense produced 18 hits over the course of the doubleheader with 25 runs scored. The total on Wednesday pushed Valdosta State to a series of games that dates back to March 14
th in which the Blazers have outscored their opponents 93-6.
The No. 1 ranked Blazers aim to keep their hot streak going this weekend at home in a three-game Gulf South Conference set against Union, beginning with a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park.
