Box Score VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Lady Blazers of Valdosta State celebrated a Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory on Saturday night at The Complex after a balanced effort led the Lady Blazers to a 70-54 win over West Georgia.
The Lady Blazers upped their season record to 14-13 overall and 10-11 in GSC play, while the loss for the Wolves snapped a four game winning streak and dropped the team to 17-10, 12-9 against league opponents.
Valdosta State's
April Thomas, who finished the night with 15 points, untied a 29-29 knot with a long three pointer to close the first half in favor of VSU, but the Wolves reclaimed the lead three minutes into the second period.
VSU would not be denied, however, as
Imari Simpson and
Jordan Waugh teamed up with back to back layups to swing the Lady Blazers back in front with a 41-39. After Waugh's layin at the 15:51 mark, Valdosta State put together a decisive 12-2 run that gave Head Coach
Kiley Hill's team a 12 point lead.
The Wolves never recovered, and VSU spread their lead to 16 by the time the final buzzer sounded.
Simpson led the offensive charge for the Lady Blazers with a 20 point, 10 rebound double-double effort, while Thomas, Waugh, and
Maggie Davis all added double digits in the scoring column with 15, 13, and 11 points, respectively.
As a team, the Lady Blazers were extremely effective with a 26-of-54 performance from the field and a 5-of-15 effort from three point range. VSU also outrebounded the Wolves 39-30 and hauled in 27 defensive boards. Waugh helped fuel the effort with 9 rebounds to finish just shy of a double-double.
With the victory and a West Alabama loss to West Florida earlier in the day in Pensacola, Fla., the Lady Blazers clinched a spot in the 2015 GSC Tournament.
VSU closes out their regular season with a 6:00 p.m. matchup next Saturday at home against the West Florida Argonauts.
