MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Valdosta State Lady Blazers competed in their final road contest of the 2014-15 regular season and put together a huge second half comeback effort to claim a critical 59-52 Gulf South Conference win over Christian Brothers in Memphis, Tenn. on Saturday afternoon.
Maggie Davis came up big for Valdosta State in the contest as the only player to reach double-digit figures in the scoring column for Valdosta State. The junior scored the first two baskets of the game for Valdosta State, and finished the afternoon with 18 points on an 8-of-10 shooting performance from the field.
The two early buckets by Davis came in the opening minute of the contest and helped open up a 4-0 lead for the Lady Blazers. Head Coach
Kiley Hill's squad went cold quickly though, and allowed CBU to take a 10-4 lead during a seven minute drought for VSU from the field.
Following the cold stretch, Valdosta State regained their composure during the ensuing four minutes to string together a 9-2 run and take a 13-12 lead. CBU reclaimed the lead one minute later on a pair of free throws and opened their lead up to 30-20 by the time the first half buzzer sounded.
The Lady Blazers allowed CBU to take a 13 point lead within the first 15 seconds of the second half on a corner three ball from Courtney Banks. That deficit would be the largest VSU would allow, however, as Valdosta State began an impressive comeback effort over the course of the next 13 minutes.
With 6:25 to go,
Maylisa Johnson found the bottom of the net on a short jumper off the glass to give the Lady Blazers their first lead of the second half. Over the course of the next five minutes, VSU outscored the Lady Bucs 14-6 to achieve a fairly comfortable 56-48 lead with just under one minute to go.
Christian Brothers never got closer than four points in the final minute, and VSU held with three free throws to secure the seven-point victory.
Valdosta State picked up the win despite a performance by Ridgell in which she matched her season high with 24 points on 9-of-24 shooting.
Jordan Waugh led the Lady Blazers on the boards for the second straight game with 11 rebounds, and VSU used a 25-of-55, 45.5 percent shooting display to earn the win. In contrast, the Lady Bucs shot just 32.7 percent from the field.
The victory boosted VSU to one game short of .500 on the year at 12-13 overall, while the team moved up to 8-11 in GSC play. Meanwhile, the Lady Bucs fell to 7-18 overall and 5-14 against league competition.
The Lady Blazers return to Valdosta, Ga. for the rest of the regular season, beginning with a matchup against the rival Tigers of West Alabama on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. in The Complex.
