VALDOSTA, Ga. - The final weeks of the 2014-15 women's basketball season are upon us, and the critical stretch begins with VSU's final road game of the regular season schedule in Memphis, Tenn. against the Lady Bucs of Christian Brothers.
The upcoming stretch for Valdosta State (11-13, 7-11 GSC) holds a tremendous amount of weight, as the Lady Blazers gun for one of the eight coveted spots in the fast-approaching Gulf South Conference Tournament. As it stands, the Lady Blazers are currently in a three way tie with West Alabama and Alabama-Huntsville for sixth place. Shorter is also in the hunt in seventh place, trailing the sixth place pack by one game.
Valdosta State aims to improve their situation with a win on Saturday over the Lady Bucs (7-17, 5-13 GSC), who haven't seen much success this season, but did manage to overtake the Lady Blazers in Valdosta earlier this season at The Complex. In that game, Breanna Ridgell tallied 17 points, with eight of those coming late in the game. She delivered the backbreaker when she buried the game-winning free throw with just five seconds to play.
The senior guard currently represents the fourth best scorer in the league with an average of 16.9 points per game, and her most recent tally of 21 points on Thursday night against West Florida upped her career total to 1,463 points. She needs just 43 points to pass her current head coach Sarah Condra as CBU's all-time scoring leader.
In addition, Ridgell showed her versatility when she swiped five steals on Thursday night to increase her career total to 183 and set a new school mark at CBU.
Expect VSU to lean on VSU's top scorer
April Thomas to lead the offensive push on Saturday, while also looking for another solid performance from freshman
Jo Bistrow, who came to within one point of her career high with four three pointers and 13 points on Thursday night against the Lady Bulldogs.
The game is slated for a 3:00 p.m. EST start, with live coverage via the links below and at www.vstateblazers.com.
