VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State Lady Blazers are off to a sizzling start this season and will face perhaps their biggest challenge yet this Saturday, as the Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville come to Titletown for an afternoon Gulf South Conference standoff.
At 4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play, the Chargers enter Saturday's contest sporting a similar record to the Lady Blazers, who currently stand at 5-1 overall and 1-0 in GSC action after Thursday night's convincing win over the North Alabama Lions at The Complex.
Madi Mitchell continues to shine for the Lady Blazers in the early part of her first season with the program. The sophomore boosted her points per game total to 11.7 after pouring in a season-high 21 points on Thursday night, and she currently ranks 17th among all scorers in the GSC. Meanwhile, senior
Maggie Davis leads the team with an average of 6.0 rebounds per game while also averaging 7.8 points points per contest.
The Lady Blazers will look to build on an all-time 32-13 advantage over the Chargers. To do so, Valdosta State will aim to replicate Thursday night's 55.8 percent shooting effort from the field, in which the Lady Blazers also connected on half of their three point shots in a 9-of-18 performance from beyond the arc. VSU will also need to provide an answer on defense for a Charger offense that ranks third in the conference with 72.0 points per game. Three players, Halle Jarnagin, Dina Saunders, and Chandler Elder all average over 10.0 points per game, and Jarnagin holds the GSC's fourth place position on the rebounding leaderboard with an average of 9.0 per contest.
