VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Lady Blazers of Valdosta State women's basketball saw their early season momentum take a hit last weekend on the road with a pair of narrow Gulf South Conference losses, but Head Coach
Kiley Hill's club has a chance to bounce back in a strong way this week when they welcome the undefeated Delta State Lady Statesmen to The Complex in Valdosta, Ga.
Valdosta State is set to enter Thursday night's showdown with a 6-3 record overall and an even 2-2 mark in GSC play, while the Lady Statesmen will put their 7-0, 4-0 GSC record on the line and come to Valdosta on the heels of their biggest victory of the season, a 63-59 win on Saturday afternoon over the No. 9 Union Lady Bulldogs.
Young newcomers
Madi Mitchell and
Aaliyah Cheatham have teamed up to lead the Lady Blazers on offense thus far as the team's top two scorers in 2015-16. As a team, Valdosta State is averaging over 60 points per game, due in large part to contributions from Mitchell, a sophomore forward who is averaging 10.7 points per contest. Meanwhile, Delta State's offensive attack rests squarely on the shoulders of senior Chelsey Rhodes. Rhodes, a senior guard out of Monticello, Ark., currently leads the league in points per game with an average of 21.4 and currently ranks as the 19th best scorer in the DSU women's basketball record books.
Perhaps the most interesting matchup of the night will be the defensive battle. Valdosta State ranks second in the GSC in points allowed per contest at 55.1. The only team with a better number in the scoring defense column are the Lady Statesmen, who have held opponents to under 50 points per game at 49.4.
Thursday night's skirmish is set to tip at 6:00 p.m. with live coverage available at www.vstateblazers.com. Don't miss Valdosta State's Christmas Special, which includes tickets for eight home games at the low price of $40.00 (plus tax).
