Box Score ALBANY, Ga. - The Lady Blazers of Valdosta State continued their stellar start to the 2015-16 season with a 56-51 win over Albany State in non-conference women's basketball action in Albany, Ga. on Tuesday night.
New additions to the team in 2015 have played a key role in Valdosta State's early success this season, and Tuesday night was no different. Freshmen
Aaliyah Cheatham and
Madi Mitchell teamed up to lead the team with 16 and 15 points, respectively. The pair also teamed up for five rebounds each behind another newcomer,
Lydia Harvey, who led the Lady Blazers on the boards with six rebounds on the night.
The Lady Blazers took a 38-21 lead into the half thanks to a 21-point frame in the second quarter. The Golden Rams were able to ease back into the contest, however, when VSU went cold in the third period and scored just four points. Holding on to a 42- 34 lead entering the fourth quarter, Valdosta State regrouped to score 14 points in the final quarter and outlast a 17 point push by Albany State.
Artisha Holston paced the Golden Rams with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting and a 5-of-6 effort from the free throw line. The Lady Blazers managed to offset Holston's strong night with 11 steals and a 41.5 percent shooting performance as a team. In addition, VSU scored 17 points on 22 free throw attempts for a 77.3 percent shooting night at the stripe.
With the victory, Valdosta State improved to a perfect 4-0, while the Golden Rams saw their record fall to 0-3 following the defeat.
The Lady Blazers return home on Sunday afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. matchup against the unbeaten Sharks of Nova Southeastern at The Complex.
