Aaliyah Cheatham each reached double figures in the scoring column with 12 and 10 points, respectively, to help lead Valdosta State to a 57-49 win over Tuskegee in the Lady Blazers' season opener at Darton University in Albany, Ga. on Saturday
Davis just missed a double-double in the contest after securing nine rebounds, while
Maddy Corazza and
Lydia Harvey added nine points each.
Tuskegee's Brownlee, a Preseason All-SIAC pick, finished with 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Meanwhile, Azore finished with 12 points for the Tigerettes. The Blazers held on for the victory, however, after a
43.2 (19-of-44) percent shooting effort from the floor while hitting 33.3 (5-of-15) of their shots from beyond the arc. The Tigerettes, who fell to 0-1 on the young season, shot 35.2 (19-of-54) percent from the floor, 22.2 (2-of-9) percent from beyond the arc and 66.7 (8-of-12) percent from the free throw line. Meanwhile the Lady Blazers improved to 1-0 after the victory.
VSU returns to action on Sunday evening to host Eckerd at 6:00 p.m. at The Complex for the Lady Blazers' home opener.
