VALDOSTA, Ga. - In Gulf South Conference volleyball, all eyes will be on Pensacola, Fla. on Tuesday night for one of the most anticipated matchups of the season, as the undefeated Valdosta State Blazers head south to take on the heavy-hitting Argonauts of West Florida.
Following the midweek matchup between the two teams who are currently tied for first place in the GSC, one squad will leave with their first league loss of the season. The Blazers hold a 12-0 record overall with a 7-0 record in conference play, while the Argonauts are 14-2 with an equally impressive 7-0 conference stint.
West Florida's powerful offense, which ranks second in the GSC with a .243 hitting percentage, will be put to the test against a stellar VSU defense that has held opponents to a .107 hitting percentage so far this season. The Blazers are averaging 2.18 blocks per set this season, due in large part to the performance of
Susanna Peonia, who currently holds a fairly comfortable lead among all GSC players with an average of 1.15 blocks per set. Additionally,
Natalia Campos has been the definition of consistency at the libero position with double-digit numbers in the dig column in every game this season and an average of 5.05 digs per set.
Offensively, the Blazers have enjoyed a balanced attack effort from several key players, most notably from
Lea Jaklen,
Antia Rodriguez-Sanchez, and
Susanna Peonia. The three are each averaging over 2.5 kills per set, and Peonia has quietly climbed to the top of the GSC leaderboard in the category. Freshmen
Sara Dandridge and
Ashley Miller have also added depth on offense with averages of 1.40 and 1.44, respectively.
Their success, of course, can be highly attributed to the performance of the reigning GSC Player of the Year,
Jessica Codato. Head Coach
Mike Swan describes Codato as the piece of the puzzle that makes the Blazers' system work, and her 423 assists back up that description. Just this past week, the versatility of the Sao Paulo native was on full display, as she racked up 126 assists while also blasting 18 kills and picking up 48 digs for an average of 4.36 digs per set. She is currently averaging 3.26 digs per set on the season.
Tuesday night's action is scheduled to tip off at 8:00 p.m. EST in Pensacola, Fla., with live coverage available at www.vstateblazers.com.
