VALDOSTA, Ga. - This Saturday in Carrollton, Ga. , the page will turn to another chapter in the long, storied history of a rivalry between the Valdosta State Lady Blazers and the West Georgia Wolves.
In the 40 year history of Lady Blazer basketball, VSU (8-6, 4-4 GSC) and UWG (7-6, 2-5 GSC) have squared off 66 times. The number marks the most games played against any opponent in the history of the Valdosta State women's basketball program, and  the Lady Blazers hold the all-time advantage against West Georgia with 36 wins against 30 losses. The only team to be defeated by Valdosta State more than the Wolves are the Golden Rams of Albany State, who have fallen to the red and black 47 times.
In order to build on VSU's past success against West Georgia, the Lady Blazers will need to rediscover their success that the team enjoyed throughout the early portion of their 2014-15 Gulf South Conference schedule, in which Valdosta State won four of their first six league games.
During that six game stretch, the Lady Blazers shot 46.7 percent from the field and were lights out from beyond the arc with a shooting percentage of 43.4 from three point range.
Since then, however, the Lady Blazers have dropped two GSC contests in which the team saw their field goal percentage fall to 32.3 and just 18.8 percent from long distance. The team has also averaged 51.5 points per game in the past two contests, which stands in stark contrast to the 64.7 points per game average the team posted during their first six conference matchups.
One area that has seen major improvement for the Lady Blazers since the holiday break is free throw shooting. In the two games played in 2015, VSU is shooting over 70 percent from the free throw line with 33 shots made in 47 attempts. If the Lady Blazers can complement their recent improvements from the charity stripe with a return to form on offense, big success lies in wait for Head Coach
Kiley Hill's squad as the mid-season point rapidly approaches.
In Saturday's upcoming skirmish against the Wolves, the Lady Blazers will be forced to contend with two of the league's top offensive players in Taylor Beverly and Seandra Lee. The pair are averaging 16.7 and 14.2 points per game, respectively. The duo both rank among the top ten scorers in the GSC and represent the only two players for UWG that are averaging double-digit figures.
Saturday's matchup is slated for a 2:00 p.m. start, and Blazer Nation can follow all of the action live right here at www.vstateblazers.com.
